One of the most successful college basketball coaches in NCAA history, Bob Knight is best remembered for his time leading the Indiana Hoosiers from 1971-2000. Knight later coached at Texas Tech (2001-2008) and prior to his long tenure at Indiana, at Army (1965-1971). During his time at Indiana, he led the Hoosiers to 11 Big Ten Conference titles and his teams reached the NCAA Final Four five times (1973, 1976, 1981, 1987, 1992), winning three. In total for his career, Knight won 902 games at the NCAA Division I level, a figure that ranks third all-time behind Mike Krzyzewski of Duke and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse. He became a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball in 1991 and College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
In 1975-1976, Knight guided Indiana to a perfect 32-0 record and his first NCAA Championship. That team is the last men’s college basketball squad to go an entire season without losing a game. His 1980-1981 Hoosiers captured a second NCAA title and, in 1986-1987, he led Indiana to a 30-4 record and third NCAA Championship. Knight earned Coach of the Year honors from the Associated Press three times and was an eight-time Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year selection. In 1984, he coached the U.S. Men’s Olympic Team to a gold medal at that year’s Summer Games in Los Angeles with a roster that featured the likes of Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin and Michael Jordan.
Born on October 25, 1940 in Massillon, Ohio, White played collegiately at Ohio State from 1959-1962. After graduating, he coached the jv team at Cuyahoga Falls High School before joining the Army and becoming an assistant coach. In 1965 at the age of 24, Knight accepted his first head coaching job when he took over the helm of the Black Knights.
