Willis Reed played center in the NBA from 1964-1974 and spent his entire career with the New York Knicks. A 1982 inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Reed helped the Knicks capture NBA titles in 1970 and 1973. For the 1969-1970 campaign, he averaged a career-high 21.7 points per game, earning NBA Most Valuable Player honors along with All-NBA First Team, All-NBA Defensive First Team and NBA All-Star Game MVP accolades. He became the first player in the history of the league to be named MVP of the regular season, All-Star Game and Finals. Reed’s jersey #19 was retired by the Knicks in 1976 and he was named a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1997.
In 1972-1973, Reed contributed 11 points and 8.6 rebounds per game to New York’s championship run and earned Finals MVP honors for the second time. From 1965-1971, Reed was named an NBA All-Star for seven consecutive years as he averaged no less than 15.5 points and 11.1 rebounds per game in any of the seasons. From 1967-1969 and in 1971, he was named to the All-NBA Second Team. As a rookie in 1964-1965, he averaged a season long double- double of 19.5 points and a career-best 14.7 rebounds per game. For the season, he was named NBA Rookie of the Year.
Prior to the NBA, Reed was a collegiate standout at Grambling State, helping the team to three Southwestern Athletic Conference titles as well as an NAIA title. In 2006, he became a member of the College Basketball Hall of Fame. After his playing days, Reed served as an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks and Sacramento Kings and head coach for Creighton University and the New Jersey Nets before moving into the front office of the Nets and New Orleans Hornets.
