Artis Gilmore played in the NBA for 12 seasons from 1976-1988 for the Chicago Bulls (1976-1982, 1987), San Antonio Spurs (1982-1987) and Boston Celtics (1988). He also played overseas in Italy for Arimo Bologna in 1988-1989. Prior to the NBA, Gilmore starred in the ABA for five years for the Kentucky Colonels from 1971-1976. Gilmore was a six-time NBA All-Star and four-time NBA All-Defensive Second Team pick in 1978. During his time in the ABA, Gilmore received ABA Rookie of the Year and league MVP honors in 1972 and helped the Colonels to an ABA title in 1975 in route to being named MVP of the playoffs. He five times was named an ABA All-Star and four times led the league in rebounding. Gilmore was named a member of the ABA All-Time Team and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 2011.
Born on September 21, 1949 in Chipley, Florida, Gilmore played college basketball first at Gardner-Webb Junior College, where he spent two seasons, before transferring to Jacksonville University. Gilmore helped lead the Dolphins to a 27-2 mark in 1970 and berth in the NCAA title game, where they were defeated by John Wooden-coached UCLA. Gilmore received consensus first-team All-American honors in 1971 and set an NCAA record for average rebounds per game with 22.7, a mark that still stands today. He is a member of both the Gardner-Webb Athletics Hall of Fame and Jacksonville University Hall of Fame.
