Ron Guidry is a former MLB pitcher who played his entire career from 1975-1988 with the New York Yankees. Known as “Louisiana Lightning”, Guidry won five straight Gold Glove Awards from 1982-1986 and, from 1986-1988, he served as Yankees team captain. Guidry’s jersey #49 has been retired by the Yankees and he is a Monument Park honoree. A four-time All-Star (1978, 1979, 1982, 1983), Guidry helped the Yankees to World Series titles in 1977 and 1978.

Guidry went 16-7 for the Yankees in 1977, contributing to the team’s first World Series title since 1962. In 1978, as the Yankees would go on to win their second straight championship, Guidry went 25-3 with an ERA of 1.74 and 248 strikeouts. His stellar campaign earned him the A.L. Cy Young Award and a second place finish in the MVP voting after he led the A.L. in ERA and wins. In 1979, he led the A.L. in ERA for the second straight year with a 2.78 mark while his 22 wins in 1985 also were best among A.L. pitchers.

In 1984, Guidry won the Roberto Clemente Award, recognizing his contributions in the community. After his playing days, Guidry served as a pitching coach and instructor at spring training with New York. Guidry was born in Lafayette, Louisiana on August 28, 1950 and played college baseball at the University of Southwestern Louisiana. He was picked by the Yankees in the 3rd round of the 1971 draft.
