Sparky Lyle pitched in the majors from 1967-1982 with the Boston Red Sox (1967-1971), New York Yankees (1972-1978), Texas Rangers (1979-1980), Philadelphia Phillies (1980-1982) and Chicago White Sox (1982). Lyle was used as a relief pitcher for the entirety of his career and compiled a 99-76 overall record to go along with a 2.88 ERA and 238 saves. As a member of the Yankees, he twice led the American League is saves in 1972 and 1976 and won back-to-back World Series rings in 1977 and 1978.

The 1972 season, Lyle’s first as a Yankee, saw him finish third in A.L. MVP voting behind a 9-5 record and 1.92 ERA. His 35 saves set a record for the American League and an MLB record for lefties. In 1973, Lyle earned his first All-Star appearance after once again leading the American League with 23 saves. He was named an All-Star for the second time in 1976 and, in 1977, Lyle went 13-5 with an ERA of 2.17, a performance that earned him a third All-Star appearance. He also won the 1977 AL Cy Young Award, an achievement which marked the first time an American League relief pitcher captured the award.

After his playing days, Lyle enjoyed a successful managing career with the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, leading the team from 1998-2012, during which time the Patriots won five Atlantic League pennants. His jersey #28 was retired by the Patriots in 2014. Lyle was born on July 22, 1944 in DuBois, Pennsylvania.
