Goose Gossage played in the majors for 22 seasons from 1972-1994 with nine teams, although he is best remembered for the time he spent with the New York Yankees from 1978-1983, which included winning a World Series title in 1978 on a team that featured such Yankees legends as Thurman Munson, Bucky Dent, Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter. The three-time All-Star also played for the Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers, Oakland A’s and Seattle Mariners. Gossage additionally spent one year in 1990 playing overseas in Japan for the Fukuoka Dalei Hawks. Gossage became a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008 and, in 2014, he was honored by the Yankees with a Monument Park plaque.

One of the greatest relief pitchers in MLB history, Gossage three times led the American League in saves in 1975, 1978 and 1980 and was the recipient of the AL Rolaids Relief Man Award in 1978. He finished his career with 310 saves which, at the time of his retirement, ranked 4th all-time. He also ranked third in MLB history with 1,002 games pitched. Between 1977-1983, Gossage’s ERA never climbed above 2.62, including a career-best .77 in 1981. Born on July 5, 1951 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Gossage was picked by the White Sox in the 1970 MLB Draft (9th round) and made his MLB debut on April 16, 1972. In 2000, Gossage authored the book “The Goose is Loose.”
