Moises Alou is a retired outfielder who played in the major leagues for 17 seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1990), Montreal Expos (1990, 1992-1996), Florida Marlins (1997), Houston Astros (1998, 2000-2001), Chicago Cubs (2002-2004), San Francisco Giants (2005-2006) and New York Mets (2007-2008). He was a six-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger Award winner & won a World Series in 1997 with the Marlins. For his career, Alou hit .303 with 2,134 hits, 332 homers and 1,287 RBI. Alou also played for the Dominican Republic at the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classic.
Alou came from a baseball-rich family. His father Felipe managed Moises in Montreal and San Francisco and his uncles Jesus and Matty and cousin Mel Rojas all enjoyed successful careers. Alou did not play organized baseball until he went to college at Canada College in California. He was drafted by the Pirates in the 2nd round of the 1986 MLB draft and made his MLB debut on July 26, 1990. After retiring from playing, Alou embarked on a success career as a baseball executive in the Dominican Republic as general manager of the Leones del Escogido. He also served as gm of the Dominican team that won the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Additionally, he pursued his love of horse racing by breeding and racing thoroughbreds.
