Andre Dawson enjoyed a long and illustrious career as an outfielder in the majors for 21 seasons from 1976-1996, mainly with the Montreal Expos (1976-1986) and Chicago Cubs (1987-1992) but later the Boston Red Sox (1993-1994) and Florida Marlins (1995-1996). During his career, Dawson maintained a batting average of .279, collected 2,774 hits, 314 stolen bases and notched 438 home runs. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010. An eight-time All-Star (1981-1983, 1987-1991), Dawson also won four Silver Slugger Awards in 1980, 1981, 1983 and 1987. Dawson is one of just eight players in MLB history to hit 300 home runs and also steal 300 bases and is one of just five players along with Willie Mays, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds and Carlos Beltran to amass 400 home runs and 300 stolen bases. His jersey #10 was retired by the Expos in 1997.

Dawson made his MLB debut with the Expos on September 11, 1976 and the next season, his first full year in the majors, Dawson hit .282 with 19 home runs and 65 RBI in route to winning N.L. Rookie of the Year honors. The 1987 season proved to be Dawson’s finest when, during his first year as a member of the Cubs, he set career-highs in homers (49) and RBI (137) while leading the league in both categories, a performance that earned him N.L. MVP accolades. Known for his strong play on defense as well, Dawson won eight Gold Gloves in a nine-year span from 1980-1988. Aside from his 1987 MVP year, Dawson earned MVP votes in eight other seasons, including consecutively from 1979-1983 and runner-up finishes in 1981 and 1983. After his playing days ended, Dawson went to work in the Marlins’ front office and won a World Series ring with the team in 2003. He also owned a restaurant in the Miami area along with a funeral home. In 2012, Dawson authored the book “If You Love This Game: An MVP’s Life in Baseball”.
