Dikembe Mutombo is a former NBA center who played from 1991-2009 with the Denver Nuggets (1991-1996), Atlanta Hawks (1996-2001), Philadelphia 76ers (2001-2002), New Jersey Nets (2002-2003), New York Knicks (2003-2004) and Houston Rockets (2004-2009). During his 18-year career, Mutombo averaged 9.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. He retired as the 2nd leading shot blocker in NBA history with 3,289 blocks, trailing only Houston Rockets great. Mutombo was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015. His No. 55 jersey has been retired by both the Nuggets and Hawks. Mutombo put his 7-foot-2 frame to consistent use during his career as he led the NBA in blocks for three straight years (1994-1996) and won NBA Defensive Player of the Year honors four times (1995, 1997, 1998, 2001). An eight-time NBA All-Star (1992, 1995-1998, 2000-2002), Mutombo additionally earned three All-NBA Defensive First Team selections in 1997, 1998 and 2001. Similarly, he was named to the All-NBA Defensive Second Team in 1995, 1999 and 2002.
Mutombo was a collegiate standout at Georgetown from 1988-1991, winning Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors twice in 1990 and 1991. Off the basketball court, Mutombo is well known for his philanthropic endeavors, twice receiving the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award (2001, 2009) honoring his community involvement. In 1999, Mutombo was one of 20 recipients of the Unites States’ highest honor for volunteerism, the President’s Vounteer Service Award. Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he started the Dikembo Mutombo Foundation to help improve the living conditions in his native country and opened the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in 2007. Mutombo has also served on the International Board of Directors for the Special Olympics and as a spokesperson for the international humanitarian agency, CARE.
