Dave Martinez was named manager of the Washington Nationals in 2018 and led the team to a World Series championship in 2019 with a game seven victory over the Houston Astros. That year, Washington started the season with a 19-31 record but rallied over the course of the summer to make the playoffs and eventually claim the organization’s first title.
Martinez’s first coaching position was as the Tampa Bay Rays’ bench coach from 2008-2014. In 2015, he was hired as the bench coach for the Chicago Cubs, where he helped the team to victory in the 2016 World Series. The Cubs’ Fall Classic win that year broke a 108-year drought.
Martinez enjoyed a long playing career from 1986-2001 with the Cubs (1986-1988, 2000), Montreal Expos (1988-1991), Cincinnati Reds (1992), San Francisco Giants (1993-1994), Chicago White Sox (1995-1997), Rays (1998-2000), Texas Rangers (2000), Toronto Blue Jays (2000) and Atlanta Braves (2001). In his 16 MLB seasons as an outfielder, Martinez recorded a career .276 batting average along with 580 RBI. He holds the distinction of recording the first hit in Tampa Bay franchise history.
Martinez was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 26, 1964 and moved to Orlando, Florida at the age of 13. He played college baseball at Valencia Community College before being picked by the Cubs in the 1983 MLB draft.
