Robin Ventura played third base in the majors from 1989-2004, primarily with the Chicago White Sox (1989-1998) but later the New York Mets (1999-2001), New York Yankees (2002-2003) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2003-2004). Ventura was a 1st round selection in the 1988 draft by the White Sox and made his MLB debut on September 12, 1989. He was well-known for his defense and won six Gold Gloves in recognition of his fielding.
After placing seventh in the 1990 A.L. Rookie of the Year voting, Ventura in 1991 hit .284 with 23 home runs and 100 RBI, a performance that earned him A.L. MVP votes. In 1992, Ventura was named to his first All-Star Game as he hit 16 home runs to go along with a bating average of .282 and 93 RBI. Ventura in 1996 hit a career-high 34 home runs and also produced 105 RBI. The 1999 campaign was among Ventura’s best. His .301 batting average and 120 RBI were both career highs and he also hit 32 home runs while placing sixth in that year’s N.L. MVP voting. In 2002, Ventura belted 27 homers with 93 RBI and was selected to his second All-Star Game.
Internationally, he won a gold medal representing the United States at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Ventura played college baseball at Oklahoma State and won both the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy in 1988 as the nation’s best college baseball player. He became a member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006, the Oklahoma State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009 and Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. After his playing days, Ventura managed the White Sox from 2012-2016.
