Greg Gumbel is a sports broadcaster whose currently works for CBS Sports as a studio host on the network’s coverage of NCAA men’s basketball and as a play-by-play announcer for NFL games. The three-time Emmy Award-winning broadcaster was honored in 2007 for excellence in sports broadcasting with the Pat Summerall Award. Gumbel’s career dates back to 1973 when he got his first job working as a weekend sports anchor for a local station in Chicago, WMAQ-TV. He went on to work for ESPN, where he was anchor for its SportsCenter program, MSG Network and WFAN Radio in New York City before joining CBS, first in 1988 as a part-time broadcaster and then full-time in 1989.

Gumbel’s duties at CBS have included hosting “The NFL Today” studio show, serving as the play-by-play voice of Super Bowls XXXV and XXXVIII, anchoring the network’s coverage of the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics and doing play-by-play for college football, College World Series and Major League Baseball games. Gumbel moved to NBC Sports in 1994 and worked for the network through 1998 before returning to CBS. While at NBC, he hosted “The NFL on NBC” along with the network’s pre-game Super Bowl shows in 1996 and 1998. He also was the play-by-play broadcaster for “Baseball Night in America”, “The NBA on NBC” and served as host of NBC’s daytime broadcast of the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Away from the microphone, Gumbel has been a longtime supporter of March of Dimes, including serving on its National Board of Advisors and Board of Trustees. He has also given his time to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as a member of its Sports Council. Gumbel was born on May 3, 1946 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and is the older brother of broadcaster Bryant Gumbel.
