In October of 1979, just one month after its beginning, ESPN hired a relatively unknown 24-year-old by the name of Chris Berman. Over the next three-plus decades, Berman would become one of the most popular and beloved sportscasters in the United States. Berman has been recognized by his colleagues, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and many other organizations for his work in sports broadcasting. Berman is best known for his unique delivery of highlights, most notably related to the NFL. Berman was named the National Sportscaster of the Year on six occasions by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, in 1989, 1990, 1993, 1994, 1996 and 2001. He ranks second among sportscasters in receiving the award. Berman and his various shows have also been the recipients of 12 Cable ACE and 10 Emmy awards. In 2010, Berman was named the recipient from the Pro Football Hall of Fame of the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award for his contributions to television and radio broadcasting as related to professional football.

During his time at ESPN Berman worked for 31 years with former NFL great Tom Jackson on Sunday NFL Countdown. The show won five cable ACE and seven Sports Emmy awards. Additionally, since 1999, Berman has served as Master of Ceremony for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. Berman is famous for using nicknames while discussing Major League Baseball highlights. Among Berman’s personal favorites from the 1000+ nicknames he’s coined include Bert “Be Home” Blyleven, Roberto “Remember the” Alomar, Fred “Crime Dog” McGriff and Jim “Two Silhouettes On” Deshaies. A few of Berman’s favorite NFL nicknames include Curtis “My Favorite” Martin, Andre “Bad Moon” Rison, Chris Fuamatu “Bad” Ma’afala and Steve “I’ve Got You Babe” Bono. Berman has played himself on the big screen and on tv, including The Waterboy, Kingpin, Spin City, The Longest Yard and Arli$$. He has also made appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live.
