As one of the most recognizable personalities covering the sport of hockey and known for his colorful fashion style, Don Cherry worked as a longtime co-host from 1986-2019 along with Ron MacLean on the “Coach’s Corner” segment that aired as part of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s (CBC) Hockey Night in Canada. He additionally created the popular hockey highlight series “Don Cherry’s Rock’em Sock’em Hockey” and, from 1984-2019, co-hosted with Brian Williams the radio show “Don Cherry’s Grapevine”. The CBC in 2004 aired a program called The Greatest Canadian in which Cherry ranked # 7 all-time. He was the recipient in 2008 of the Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service Award and, in 2016, was honored with a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. In 2019, Cherry became a member of the American Hockey League Hall of Fame.

In 1980, Cherry began his broadcasting career with the CBC working as an analyst for the network’s coverage of the NHL playoffs. Prior to that, Cherry served as head coach of the Boston Bruins from 1974-1979. The Bruins made the playoffs in each of Cherry’s five years at the helm and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals in back-to-back years for the 1976-1977 and 1977-1978 seasons. In total, Boston was 231-105 with 64 ties under Cherry’s lead. As a player, he competed in the AHL, NHL, Western Hockey League and Central Professional Hockey League from 1954-1972, which included five Calder Cups, the AHL’s equivalent of the Stanley Cup. Outside of hockey, Cherry appeared in several tv shows, including “Power Play”, “Goosebumps” and “Zeroman” and lent his voice to such animated movies as “The Great Polar Bear Adventure”, “The Wild” and “The Magic Hockey Skates”. He also authored numerous books, including “Don Cherry’s Hockey Greats and More”, “Straight Up and Personal: The World According to Grapes” and “Don Cherry’s Hockey Stories and Stuff”.
