One of the greatest players in NHL history, Mario Lemieux spent his entire career from 1984-1997 and 2000-2006 playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Lemieux was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 and, in 2017, was named as one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players of all-time. He is the Penguins’ franchise record holder for goals (690), assists (1,033) and points (1,723). He was named an NHL All-Star 10 times during his career and six times won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s leader in points.

Lemieux helped the Penguins capture back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992, the franchise’s first championships, while winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoffs MVP in both postseasons. In 1988, 1993 and 1996, Lemieux won the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s MVP. He was also a four-time winner of the Ted Lindsay Award, given to the league’s top player as voted by fellow players. Additionally, Lemieux was named the All-Star Game MVP in 1985, 1988 and 1990. Internationally, Lemieux represented Canada in numerous competitions, winning a gold medal at the 2002 Olympics and finishing first at both the 1987 Canada Cup and 2004 World Cup of Hockey. In 1999, he became the principal owner of the Penguins franchise, which has captured three additional Stanley Cups (2009, 2016, 2017) under his leadership. He is the only person to have won a Stanley Cup as both an owner and player.

A cancer survivor diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in 1993, Lemieux is well-known for his philanthropy as he established the Mario Lemieux Foundation, which funds medical research projects and provides support to other organizations such as the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, Leukemia Society and Children’s Home of Pittsburgh. The foundation also started Austin’s Playroom Project, which builds playrooms as hospitals throughout the United States.
Lemieux was born on October 5, 1965 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was honored by the country in 2004 with induction into its Walk of Fame, in 2009 when he became a member of the Order of Quebec and in 2010 when he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
