David Ortiz, affectionately known as “Big Papi”, retired with the Boston Red Sox in 2016 as one of the most popular players in the history of the storied franchise. Ortiz played in the big leagues from 1997-2016 and spent 14 of his 20 major league seasons playing in Boston – the other six were spent from 1997-2002 with the Minnesota Twins - and played an integral role in the Red Sox winning three World Series in 2004, 2007 and 2013. He was named MVP of the 2013 World Series after belting home runs in Games 1 and 2 and recording six RBI with a batting average of .688.

Ortiz was a 10-time All-Star and seven-time Silver Slugger Award winner and three times led the American League in RBI. He won the Hank Aaron Award twice as the American League’s top hitter and Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award eight times. He set a Boston franchise record in 2006 with 54 home runs, the most ever in a single season. At the time of his retirement, Ortiz’s 541 total home runs ranked 17th all-time among MLB players and 1st among designated hitters.

Ortiz was born on November 18, 1975 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He signed with the Seattle Mariners in 1992 before being traded to Minnesota in 1996. Ortiz made his debut in the majors with the Twins on September 2, 1997. He was released by the Twins after the 2002 season and signed with Boston in early 2003. As they say, the rest is history. He was five times named the Red Sox MVP and had his jersey #34 retired by the Red Sox in 2017. He also became a member of their Hall of Fame in 2020. Off the field, Ortiz established the David Ortiz Children’s Fund in 2007 and served as an ambassador for UNICEF Kid Power. He was the recipient of the Robert Clemente Award in 2011 for his play on the field, strong sportsmanship and community work.
