Amanda Beard swam for the United States at four Summer Olympics, winning seven medals – two gold, four silver and one bronze. Beard debuted for the U.S. Olympic team at the 1996 Games in Atlanta when she was only 14 years old and a freshman in high school. She went on to win three medals - a pair of silvers in the 100-meter and 200- meter breaststroke events as well as gold in the 4x100 meter medley. Beard medaled once more at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, capturing a bronze for the 200- meter breaststroke. At the 2004 Games in Athens, she had another successful showing, winning an additional three medals (one gold, two silver) in the 4x100 meter medley, 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke competitions. She failed to medal at the 2008 Summer Games but had the honor of being elected co-captain along with Natalie Coughlin and Dara Torres.

In back-to-back years in 2003 and 2004, Beard was named the top American Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World magazine and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2018.  At the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2004, Beard broke the 200-meter breaststroke world record. On top of her Olympics accomplishments, Beard also claimed eight USA Swimming National titles and won three medals at the 2003 FINA World Championships, including a gold in the 200-meter breaststroke event. Beard similarly medaled at a pair of Pan Pacific Championships in 1995 and 2002, winning a total of six medals, including two golds. Out of the pool, Beard has worked as a model, appearing in such publications as Sports Illustrated and FHM. She also appeared as a correspondent for “The Best Damn Sports Show Period.” In 2012, she released the New York Times Bestseller “In the Water They Can’t See You Cry.” In 2017, Beard founded Beard Swim Co. in Gig Harbor, Washington.
