At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Massy Franklin captured four gold medals in the 100-meter backstroke, 200-meter backstroke, 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter medley competitions. Franklin also took home the bronze medal in the 100-meter freestyle event. She won another gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio in the 200-meter freestyle event.

Her first international competition was the 2010 FINA World Swimming Championships held in Dubai, where she won two bronze medals at the age of 15. Franklin participated in the 2011, 2013 and 2015 World Championships, winning a total of 16 medals for the U.S., 11 of which were gold. At the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships held in Gold Coast, Australia, she won a further four medals (one gold, two silver and one bronze). Over the course of her career, Franklin set world records two times each in the backstroke and medley relay events.

In 2011, Franklin was named FINA Swimmer of the Year. In 2012, she was both Swimming World’s World Swimmer of the Year and again the FINA Swimmer of the Year. In 2015, Franklin won an ESPY for Best Female College Athlete. She was born in Pasedena, California on May 10, 1995 and was raised in the Denver, Colorado area. Franklin attended college at the University of California-Berkley and the University of Georgia, where she won a combined seven individual NCAA titles.
