He played three seasons for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles following two seasons with the WFL's Philadelphia Bell. Papale was given the nickname "Rocky" while playing with the Eagles. Excluding kickers, he holds the NFL record as the oldest rookie (age 30). Papale was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2001 has served as a spokesman for the disease, encouraging people to get regular check-ups. He has also appeared in commercials for Thomas Jefferson University Hospital encouraging people to get tested. Papale was born in Glenolden, Pennsylvania and attended college at Saint Joseph's University on a track scholarship.
