Papale was the inspiration for the 2006 movie "Invincible", starring Mark Wahlberg. He played three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles following two seasons with the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League. He was given the nickname "Rocky" (named after the 1976 Sylvester Stallone movie and character) while playing with the Eagles. He holds the record as the oldest rookie in the National Football League (excluding kickers). Papale was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2001, and has since recovered from the disease. He has become a spokesman for the disease, encouraging people to get regular check ups and examinations. He has appeared in commercials for Thomas Jefferson University Hospital encouraging others to be tested. Papale is currently the regional director of marketing and senior account executive for higher-education marketing at Sallie Mae.
