He played the majority of his career with Cincinnati from 1964 as a rookie to 1976. Perez was known for a hot bat and good in clutch situations. From 1967-1977, he drove in at least 90 runs and recorded 100-plus RBI seven times. He was named MVP of the 1967 All-Star Game.
Perez was the starting first baseman on the Reds’ championship teams of 1975 and 1976 before being traded to the Montreal Expos in 1977. He played there until 1979 before joining Boston from 1980-82.
After a season in Philadelphia, he was sent back to the Reds for whom he wrapped up his career from 1984-86. During the final week of his MLB career, at age 44, Perez earned National League Player of the Week honors, going 8-for-19 with six RBI.
He owns a career batting average of .279 with 2,732 hits and 379 home runs.
