One of the best to ever play third base, Mike Schmidt spent 18 seasons from 1972-1989 with the Philadelphia Phillies. Known for his excellence in the field as well as at the plate, Schmidt was named an All-Star 12 times and won the National League Most Valuable Player Award three times in 1980, 1981 and 1986. He won 10 Gold Gloves and six Silver Slugger Awards and led the NL in home runs eight times and RBI four times. In total for his career, Schmidt notched 548 homers, which ranked him at the time of his retirement 7th all-time.
In 1980, Schmidt led Philadelphia to its first World Series title in team history by defeating Kansas City in six games. For his efforts, Schmidt was named MVP of the Fall Classic.

Schmidt was named a member of both Major League Baseball’s All-Century Team and All-Time Team and inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995. He also had his jersey #20 retired by the Phillies in 1990 and is a member of the team’s Wall of Fame. In 1999, The Sports News ranked Schmidt #28 on its list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players of all-time, the highest ranked third baseman. Schmidt was born on September 27, 1949 in Dayton, Ohio and played college baseball at Ohio University, where in 1970 he was named All-American in route to helping lead the Bobcats to a berth in the College World Series. He was picked by the Phillies in the 1971 MLB Draft (2nd round) and made his debut in the majors on September 12, 1972.
