Esposito was born on April 23, 1943 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and played collegiately at Michigan Tech, where he was three times named a first-team All-America. He helped lead the school to a NCAA title in 1964-1965 and remains today the Huskies all-time leader with a 2.55 goals scored against average. Esposito turned pro in 1967 when he played for the WHL’s Vancouver Canucks. He made his NHL debut in 1968 with the Montreal Canadiens before being claimed off waivers by Chicago in 1969, where he won the Calder Memorial Trophy later that season as the NHL’s top rookie.
