Tommy John pitched in the majors for 26 seasons from 1963-1989 with the Cleveland Indians (1963-1964), Chicago White Sox (1965-1971), L.A. Dodgers (1972-1974, 1976-1978), New York Yankees (1978-1982, 1986-1989), California Angels (1982-1985) and Oakland Athletics (1985). After making his debut in the majors on September 6, 1963, John went on to compile a 288-231 record with an ERA of 3.34 over the course of his career, ranking 26th all-time in wins, 8th in games started (700) and 20th in innings pitched (4,710.3)

John is often associated with the elbow ligament repair surgery first performed on him that now bears his name, which he underwent during the 1974 season. The performing doctor of the operation gave John 100-1 odds that he’d ever pitch again. After sitting out the 1975 season to recover, John rejoined the Dodgers in 1976. His full recovery became apparent in 1977 when he posted a stellar 20-7 record with an ERA of 2.78, helping the Dodgers win an N.L. West Division title in route to an appearance in the World Series. John finished as the N.L. Cy Young runner-up for his efforts.

After an All-Star season in 1978, John was traded to the Yankees, where he went 21-9 with a 2.96 ERA in 1979 and posted a 22-9 record with a 3.43 ERA in 1980. He was named an All-Star and placed in the top five for A.L. MVP voting both seasons. Ultimately, three of John’s four All-Star appearances (1968, 1978-1980) came after his revolutionary surgery as did 164 of his career 288 wins. After his playing days, John worked as a baseball broadcast analyst and served as manager of the Atlantic League’s Bridgeport Bluefish. John was born on May 22, 1943 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
