Steve Garvey played first base in the majors for 19 seasons from 1969-1987, primarily with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1969-1982) and later the San Diego Padres (1983-1987). Garvey was ten times named an All-Star (1974-1981, 1984, 1985), captured the National League MVP Award in 1974, won four Gold Gloves for his defense and holds the all-time N.L. mark for consecutive games played with 1,207. Garvey appeared in three World Series – two with the Dodgers and one with the Padres - in 1978, 1981 and 1984 and won the 1981 Fall Classic with Los Angeles. For his career, Garvey maintained a batting average of .294 and recorded 2,599 hits, 272 homers and 1,308 RBI. His jersey #6 was retired by the Padres in 1988 and he became a member of the Legends of Dodgers Baseball in 2018.

During Garvey’s MVP campaign of 1974, he hit 21 home runs and drove in 111 runners with a batting average of .312. After his MVP award that season, Garvey began a streak of eight consecutive years through the 1981 campaign in which he garnered MVP votes. During the Dodgers’ World Series season in 1981, Garvey hit .283 with 10 homers and 63 RBI. Known for his clutch postseason heroics, Garvey in 1974 and 1978 was named NLCS MVP in helping Los Angeles advance to the World Series. In 1981, Garvey was the recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award in recognition of his strong character, presence in the community and sportsmanship.

Born on December 22, 1948 in Tampa, Florida, Garvey played college baseball and football at Michigan State. He was picked by the Dodgers in the 1968 MLB Draft in the 1st round and made his MLB debut on September 1, 1969. Off the field, Garvey has supported numerous charitable endeavors, including the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Fans4TheCure, Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, Baseball Assistance Team (BAT), Scripps Clinic and Research Board and UCLA Neurosurgery Board. Garvey has received numerous honors and accolades, including being named "One of the Ten Outstanding Men in America" by the Jaycees and awarded the William A. (Bill) Shea Award, the most prestigious honor bestowed by Little League Baseball.
