One of the most celebrated women’s basketball players ever, Tamika Catchings played the small forward position in the WNBA and spent the entirety of her career from 2002-2016 with the Indiana Fever. Elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020, Catchings enjoyed a highly decorated career, earning 10 All-Star selections as well as seven times being named All-WNBA First Team. At the time of her retirement, Catchings ranked first all-time in league history in steals and free throws and second in rebounds and scoring. In international play, Catchings won four gold medals while representing the United States at the 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics.

In 2002, her first season with the Fever, Catchings averaged 18.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, earning WNBA Rookie of the Year honors. Defense was an integral part of her game, evidenced by the five WNBA Defensive Player of the Year awards she captured in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2012. In nine straight seasons from 2005-2013 and again in 2015, Catchings was named to the WNBA All-Defensive First Team. In 2011, she won WNBA MVP honors and the next year, she put together a per game average of 17.4 points and 7.6 rebounds in route to leading the Fever to a WNBA championship and receiving Finals MVP honors.

Catchings was born on July 21, 1979 in Stratford, New Jersey. She attended college at the University of Tennessee from 1997-2001. In 2000, Catchings won numerous awards including the Naismith College Player of the Year, USBWA Women’s National Player of the Year, Associated Press (AP) Player of the Year and WBCA Player of the Year. Catchings in 2004 founded the Catch the Stars Foundation, a nonprofit that sponsors basketball camps, mentoring and literacy initiatives for underprivileged children. In recognition of her philanthropic work, Catchings has received numerous honors, including being named the inaugural ESPN Sports Humanitarian of the Year, a two-time winner of the Dawn Staley Community Award and a three-time recipient of the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award, both of which are presented by the WNBA. In 2016, Catchings authored the book “Catch A Star: Shining through Adversity to Become a Champion”, which discusses how through hard work and faith in God she was able to succeed and overcome challenges including separation from family, hearing loss and injuries.
