Roy Williams has served as head coach of the University of North Carolina men’s basketball team since 2003. Since taking over the Tar Heels program, he’s led UNC to three National Championships (2005, 2009, 2017). Under Williams’ leadership, North Carolina has captured nine ACC regular season titles (2005, 2007-2009, 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2019) along with three ACC tournament championships (2007, 2008, 2016). Williams is a 2006 inductee into the College Basketball Hall of Fame, while in 2007 he became a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Williams has led the Tar Heels to five Final Four appearances during his tenure as head coach. In 2006 and 2011, he was named ACC Coach of the Year. The 2006 season saw him honored as Coach of the Year by the Associated Press along with winning the Henry Iba Award as well as the Adolph Rupp Cup. He trails only the legendary coach Dean Smith for most wins in school program history.

Before coaching at UNC, Williams was head coach at Kansas for 15 years from 1988-2003, where he led the Jayhawks to four appearances in the Final Four. Williams earned AP Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and also led Kansas to five Big Eight Conference regular season titles (1991-1993, 1995, 1996). Prior to becoming head coach at Kansas, Williams was an assistant at UNC from 1978-1988. Williams was born on August 1, 1950 in Marion, North Carolina and played collegiately at UNC for his mentor Smith in 1968-1969.
