Rico Petrocelli is a former MLB infielder who played his entire 13-year career from 1963, and then 1965-1976 for the Boston Red Sox. After bouncing between the minor leagues and the Red Sox in 1963, Petrocelli spent the entire season in Boston in 1965. The following year, he hit 18 home runs and batted .238 with 58 RBI. Petrocelli was a major component of Boston’s unlikely run to the World Series in 1967. That year marked the club’s first winning season since 1958 and its first return to the World Series since 1946. The Red Sox lost in the Fall Classic 4-3 to St. Louis. That season, Petrocelli earned his first All Star selection.
He led American League shortstops in fielding percentage in 1968 and 1969 while increasing his power hitting prowess. Petrocelli hit 29 home runs in 1970 and 28 home runs in 1971. He continued to be a reliable defender throughout the early 1970s although injuries limited his playing time. He retired from Major League Baseball in 1977 and owns the eighth-highest career fielding percentage among third basemen at .970. After retiring, he worked as a broadcaster for the Red Sox and later served as a minor league coach for the Chicago White Sox A and AA affiliate from 1986-88 before coaching Boston’s AAA Pawtucket Red Sox in 1992. He was elected to the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1997.
