Phil Esposito played center in the NHL from 1963-1981 with the Chicago Blackhawks (1963-1967), Boston Bruins (1967-1975) and New York Rangers (1975-1981). A 10-time NHL All-Star (1969-1975, 1977, 1978, 1980), Esposito was named to the First All-Star Team in six consecutive seasons from 1969-1974. Esposito became a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984 and, in 2017, he was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in league history. The Bruins retired his jersey #7 in 1987. Esposito five times captured the Art Ross Trophy as the leading scorer during the NHL’s regular season and twice won the Lester B. Pearson Award (now known as the Ted Lindsay Award) as the league’s top performer during the regular season. In 1968-1969, he became the first NHL player in history to eclipse 100 points in a single season, finishing with 126. That season, he won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the MVP of the league, the first of two times being so honored.

In 1969-1970, Esposito helped lift the Bruins to a Stanley Cup championship, scoring 43 goals and 56 assists during the regular season. He won a second Stanley Cup with Boston for the 1971-1972 campaign, contributing 66 goals and 67 assists. In international play, Esposito competed for Canada in the 1972 Summit Series and 1976 Canada Cup. In the former year, he was named the recipient of the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s top male athlete. After his playing days, Esposito coached the New York Rangers from 1986-1989. He was also part of the group that founded the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992 and held the position of president and general manager of the franchise until 1998. Esposito was born on February 20, 1942 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and is the brother of fellow NHL Hall of Famer Tony Esposito.
