Mark Bavaro played tight end in the NFL for nine seasons from 1985-1994 with the New York Giants (1985-1990), Cleveland Browns (1992) and Philadelphia Eagles (1993-1994). Bavaro was a popular member of the New York squads that won Super Bowls XXI and XXV. He became a member of the Giants Ring of Honor in 2011. Born on April 28, 1963 in Winthrop, Massachusetts, Bavaro attended Notre Dame before being picked by the Giants in the 4th round of the 1985 NFL Draft. He started all 16 games his rookie season with New York and earned a spot on the Pro Football Writers Association’s All-Rookie Team.
In 1986, his second year in the NFL, Bavaro caught 66 passes for 1,001 yards — both career-highs — while scoring four touchdowns. For his solid play that season, he was named to the Pro Bowl and also earned first-team All-Pro honors. That postseason, he caught eight passes for 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Giants went on to defeat the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI, 39-20. Bavaro earned a trip to the Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors for the second straight season in 1987, notching 55 catches for 867 yards and a career-best eight touchdowns. For the 1990 season, which ended with Bavaro winning his second Super Bowl ring, he amassed 393 yards of receiving with five scores. In Super Bowl XXV, he caught five passes for 50 yards in the Giants’ 20-19 win over Buffalo.
