One of the greatest race drivers in history, Mario Andretti is one of just two people to have won racing events in IndyCar, Formula One, NASCAR and World Sportscar Championship. He won the Daytona 500 in 1967 and Indianapolis 500 in 1969 and, combined with a Formula One World Championship in 1978, is the only driver in history to win all three. He additionally won four IndyCar championships in 1965, 1966, 1969 and 1984 and was the last American citizen to win a Formula One event when he captured the Dutch Grand Prix in 1978. Andretti also was a three-time victor at the 12 Hours of Sebring and additionally won the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen and 6 Hours of Daytona races. In total on the major racing circuits, Andretti won 109 races.
Andretti’s list of honors and accolades is long. In 2000, both RACER magazine and Associated Press proclaimed him Driver of the Century. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame America in 1990, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame in 1986 and National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1996. In 2005, Andretti was awarded the Commendatore dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana, the highest civilian honor presented by the government of Italy. Andretti became just the second person associated with the sport of auto racing to receive the honor (along with Enzo Ferrari).
