Novacek was picked in 1985 in the 6th round of the NFL Draft by the Cardinals out of the University of Wyoming. In 1984, Novacek set the single-season NCAA mark by a tight end for average yards per catch at 22.6. As a result of his efforts, he was named first-team All-WAC and All-American honorable mention. Novacek was born on October 24, 1962 in Martin, South Dakota and went to Gothenburg High School in Nebraska, where he played three sports and started at quarterback for two seasons. Novacek became a member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and is also part of the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, University of Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame and Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame.
