Bill Bates played safety and special teams in the NFL and spent his entire 15-year career from 1983-1997 with the Dallas Cowboys.Bates joined Dallas as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Tennessee in 1983. He quickly proved himself on special teams and following his rookie season, he was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Year. In 1984, he received both All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors and became the first NFL player to be named to the latter as a special teamer. Bates won three Super Bowl rings with Dallas, playing in Super Bowls XXVIII and XXX while being on injured reserve during Super Bowl XXVII.

In 1989 and 1990, Bates led Dallas in special teams tackles in consecutive years, becoming the franchise’s first player to do so. From 1990-1994, he earned the Cowboys’ Bob Lilly Award every season, an annual accolade voted by Dallas fans and given to a player who shows high-character on and off the gridiron. In 1993, Bates won the Ed Block Courage Award after he bounced back from a knee injury that ended his 1992 campaign early. The 15 seasons Bates spent with the Cowboys tied him at the time of his retirement with Ed “Too Tall” Jones and Mark Tuinei for most all-time in franchise history.

After his playing days concluded, Bates coached with the Cowboys from 1998-2003 before coaching high school football in Florida. Off the field, he founded the Bill Bates Foundation for Children and was named in 1994 the “Best Dad in Dallas”. Bates has also been involved with a number of business ventures, including the Bill Bates Cowboy Ranch, Patio Scapes, Temperature Management Systems, My School Streams and Austin Custom Homes.
