Herm Edwards has served as the head football coach for the Arizona State Sun Devils since 2018. Prior to moving to the desert, Edwards worked for ESPN as an NFL analyst from 2009 – 2017. Edwards went into coaching after his retirement from playing in the NFL from 1977 – 1986. During his time in the league, Edwards played cornerback for the Philadelphia Eagles for 9 seasons, where in 1980 he was named second-team All-NFL and helped the Eagles to a spot in Super Bowl XV, before finishing his career with the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams.
Edwards’ first coaching position came in 1987 as an assistant coach at San Jose State. After the 1989 season, he moved to the NFL and worked as an assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being named head coach of the New York Jets in 2001. He coached the Jets for five seasons before taking the head job with the Chiefs for three seasons beginning in 2006.
Long considered a master motivator and role model, Edwards wrote a book titled “You Play to Win the Game: Leadership Lessons For Success On And Off The Field” and is an accomplished motivational speaker on such topics as leadership, teamwork and peak performance. Additionally, Edwards has been involved with many charitable endeavors. In 1985, he founded the Herm Edwards Youth Foundation and has hosted the Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp in California. Additionally, he has supported Boys & Girls Clubs, was named to the National Advisory Committee of the Positive Coach Alliance and has participated in an initiative called All Pro Dad, a parenting program that helps men lead and love their family by becoming better fathers and husbands.
For his work in the community, Edwards was named the Big Brother of the Year in 1982, Walter Camp Man of the Year in 2013 and received the Shell Legacy Award in 2015. Edwards was born in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey and played college football both at Cal-Berkley and San Diego State before graduating from the latter.
