Jim Lampley is a three-time Emmy Award winning sports broadcaster who has covered a variety of sports during his long and successful career. Lampley was the lead play-by-play broadcaster for HBO World Championship Boxing from 1988-2008 and was recognized for his work in 1992 when he was named the recipient of the Sam Taub Award. He also became a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2015. Additionally, from 1976-2008, Lampley covered 14 Olympic Games, a record for a single broadcaster. He also appeared on HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” for which he won the aforementioned Emmy Awards.
Lampley first joined ABC in 1974 and worked on the network’s coverage of Major League Baseball, NASCAR and college basketball. He was the primary host for ABC’s broadcast of the United States Football League (USFL) from 1983-1985 and later was on the broadcast team for Super Bowl XIX. In 1987, Lampley joined the Los Angeles-based television station, KCBS-TV. That year he also covered Wimbledon for HBO. Lampley joined NBC in 1992, where he continued his football and Olympic duties. Lampley has also played himself in numerous movies, including “Rocky Balboa”, “Blades of Glory”, “Creed” and “Southpaw”. Lampley additionally has owned a film production company, Crystal Spring Productions. He is a 1971 graduate of the University of North Carolina.
