Swimmer Brooke Bennett represented the United States at two Summer Olympics, winning three gold medals, and won 14 national titles. Bennett’s first gold came at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, where she finished first in the 800 meter freestyle event. She defended her 800 meter win at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney while also capturing gold in the 400 meter freestyle competition. In 1996, she was named the “Sports Woman of the Year” by the United Stated Olympic Committee (USOC). She also appeared on the cover of a Wheaties cereal box. In 2010, Bennett became a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Bennett’s first international competition came at age 14 when she participated in the 1994 World Championships and took home a bronze medal in the 800 meter freestyle. The next year at the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, she won a gold medal in the 400 meter freestyle and a silver in the 800 meter freestyle. Later at the 1998 World Championships, Bennett captured three more medals (one gold, two silver). After retiring from competitive swimming, Bennett worked for Bright House Sports Network as a broadcaster, coached the Northeast (FL) High School’s swim team and founded the Brooke Bennett Swim Academy.
