Walt Garrison is a former NFL running back who played his entire professional career from 1966-1974 with the Dallas Cowboys. A durable player, Garrison missed just seven games during his nine seasons in the league. In total for his career, Garrison amassed 5,680 total yards with 39 touchdowns. In 1985, he was named a member of the Cowboys 25th Anniversary Team.
Garrison’s first few years with the Cowboys saw him utilized primarily on special teams as a kickoff returner, but in 1968 he started seeing action in the offensive backfield and rushed for 271 yards on 45 carries with five scores. In 1969, he rushed for a career-best 808 yards. In 1970, Garrison helped lead the Cowboys to a berth in Super Bowl V where they were defeated by the Baltimore Colts, 16-13. The next season saw Garrison showing-off his catching abilities by leading the team with 40 receptions and the Cowboys returning to the Super Bowl. In the title game, he rushed for 74 yards on 14 carries as Dallas emerged victorious in Super Bowl VI over the Miami Dolphins, 24-3. In 1972, Garrison was named to the Pro Bowl after a 784-yard, seven-touchdown season.
A standout at Oklahoma State University, Garrison was a second-team All-Big Eight selection in 1964 and earned All-Big Eight honors in 1965. He is a member of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Oklahoma State Athletics Hall of Honor. Off the field, Garrison competed in professional rodeo during the NFL off-season. He was also generous with his time philanthropically and established the Walt Garrison Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
