Adam Taliaferro joined the Penn State football team in 2000 as a highly touted freshman. On September 23, 2000 against Ohio State, in only the fifth game of his collegiate career, Taliaferro suffered a career-ending spinal cord injury while tackling Jerry Westrbooks. The hit left Taliaferro paralyzed from the neck down. After surgery to fuse his C-5 vertebrae, he was given only a 3% chance to ever walk again. After eight months of rehab at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia, Taliaferro began walking again. Less than a year after his injury Taliaferro returned to Penn State and led the Nittany Lions onto the field for the opening game of the 2001 season. He remained part of the football program and worked under head coach Joe Paterno as a student-assistant coach.

In 2001, Taliaferro started the Adam Taliaferro Foundation to assist people with spinal cord injuries. That same year, a book titled Miracle in the Making detailing his recovery was written by Scott Brown and Sam Carchid. In 2008, Taliaferro received the Humanitarian Award from the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association. In 2011, Taliaferro was elected to the Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders, a position he held until his appointment in January 2015 to the New Jersey General Assembly.
