Rick Barnes has served as the men’s head basketball coach at the University of Tennessee since 2015. He was named SEC Coach of the Year in 2017-18 after coaching the Vols to a share of the regular-season conference title, the school’s first in a decade. In 2018-19, Barnes led the Vols to a berth in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and, for his efforts, was named Naismith Coach of the Year and received the Henry Iba Award.

Prior to Tennessee, he was the head coach at the University of Texas from 1998-2015, where he compiled an overall record of 402-180 and led the Longhorns to the NCAA Tournament in 16 of his 17 seasons in Austin, including a spot in the Final Four in 2003. He was four times named Big 12 Coach of the Year (1999, 2003, 2008 & 2014) and, in 2009, was honored with the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award.

Before Texas, Barnes was head coach at George Mason (1987-1988), Providence (1988-1994) and Clemson (1994-1998). He also served as an assistant coach at Davidson, George Mason, Alabama and Ohio State. Barnes attended college at Lenoir-Rhyne College, where he was a member of the basketball team before graduating in 1977.
