Neal Broten is a former NHL center who played from 1981-1997 with the Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars (1981-1995, 1997), New Jersey Devils (1994-1997) and L.A. Kings (1996-1997). Prior to his professional career, Broten was a member of the 1980 United States “Miracle on Ice” Olympic team and played alongside Mike Eruzione and Jim Craig to defeat the heavily-favored Soviet Union in route to capturing a gold medal at Lake Placid. In 2000, Broten became a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

A veteran of 1,099 NHL games and a two-time All-Star (1983, 1986), Broten became the first U.S.-born NHL player to eclipse 100 points in a season, a feat he accomplished in 1985-1986 when he posted 29 goals and 76 assists. Later in his career, Broten won a Stanley Cup with the Devils in 1995. In 1998, he won the Lester Patrick Award, honoring his contributions to the sport of hockey. That same year, the Stars retired his jersey #8.

Born on November 29, 1959 in Roseau, Minnesota, Broten played collegiately at the University of Minnesota where he received WCHA Rookie of the Honors. He scored the game-winning goal to help the Gophers win the 1979 NCAA championship and in 1981 won the Hobey Baker Award, which is presented to the nation’s top college hockey player. Along with Ed Belfour, Broten is the only hockey player to have won an Olympic gold medal, NCAA title and Stanley Cup.
