Larry Dierker is a former MLB pitcher who played from 1964-1977, primarily with the Houston Colt .45s/Astros. He also spent the final season of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals. Dierker compiled 139 wins during his career and maintained a lifetime ERA of 3.31 to go along with 1,493 strikeouts. His jersey #49 has been retired by Houston and he is a member of the Astros Hall of Fame.

In 1968, he put together a solid campaign as one of the Colt .45’s starting pitchers, posting a 3.31 ERA and 12 wins. Dierker had a career year in 1969, winning 20 games and recording an ERA of 2.33 while turning in a workhorse-like performance as evidenced by his 305.1 innings pitched. That season, Dierker was named an All-Star, earned N.L. MVP votes and posted career-highs in all of the aforementioned categories. Later in 1971, he earned his second All-Star selection as he went 12-6 with an ERA of 2.72.

From 1997-2001, Dierker put on an Astros uniform once more, this time as the team’s manager. Out of his five years at the helm, Houston won four N.L. Central Division titles and advanced to the playoffs in all but one season. In his second season, Dierker managed the team to a 102-60 record and for his efforts earned N.L. Manager of the Year honors. Prior to assuming managerial duties with Houston, from 1979-1996 and again in 2004-2005, Dierker served as an analyst for the Astros’ television and radio broadcasts.
