Keith Hernandez enjoyed great success during a 17-year baseball career from 1974-1990 with the St. Louis Cardinals (1974-1983), New York Mets (1983-1989) and Cleveland Indians (1990). Hernandez was part of two World Series-winning teams, one with St. Louis in 1982 and the second with New York in 1986. He was five times named an All-Star, won 11 Gold Gloves – the most ever by a first baseman - and two Silver Slugger Awards. In 1979, Hernandez won the National League batting title after hitting .344 and was named NL MVP, sharing the honor with Willie Stargell. He became a member of the Mets Hall of Fame in 1997 and was voted by a panel of media members as the franchise’s all-time first baseman as part of the Mets’ 50th Anniversary celebration.

Born on October 20, 1953 in San Francisco, California, Hernandez played college baseball for a short time at the College of San Mateo before being picked by St. Louis in the 1971 MLB draft (41st round). He made his debut in the majors on August 30, 1974. After retiring from playing, Hernandez remained in the spotlight. In 1992, he appeared as himself in a two-part episode of “Seinfeld”. He also made an appearance in the tv show “Law & Order” and in a couple of movies, including “The Yards” and “The Scout”. In 2006, Hernandez was hired by WPIX and SportsNet New York as a color commentator for Mets games, teaming with Ron Darling and Gary Cohen. In 2010, Hernandez was honored with two New York Emmy Awards, one for his individual work and the other with his broadcast partners. He also worked for Fox Sports as a studio analyst during the MLB playoffs in 2017. Hernandez has published a number of books, including the 2018 release “I’m Keith Hernandez”.
