Johnny Manziel, affectionately nicknamed “Johnny Football”, starred as Texas A&M’s starting quarterback from 2012-2013, earning a wide array of individual awards before embarking on a pro football career in the NFL, Canadian Football League, American Alliance of Football and pro indoor football. In 2012 as a freshman, Manziel led the Aggies to an 11-2 record, No. 5 overall ranking and victory in the Cotton Bowl. For the year, he threw for 3,706 yards and 26 touchdowns, completing 68% of his passes while also rushing for 1,401 yards and 21 touchdowns.
He became the first freshman and fifth player ever in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 3,000 yards in the same season. Behind such a dominant season, Manziel won the Heisman Trophy, Manning Award and Davey O’Brien Award, the first freshman to win all three honors. He was also a consensus All-American, First-Team All-SEC selection, SEC Offensive Player of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year.
Manziel followed that up with a 2013 campaign in which he threw for 4,114 yards with 37 touchdowns, rushing for 759 more yards and nine additional touchdowns. For 2013, he was named the SEC Male Athlete of the Year and earned another First-Team All-SEC selection. Manziel was chosen 22nd overall in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, for whom he played from 2014-2015. In 2018, he played in the CFL for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes, joining the AAF’s Memphis Express in 2019.
