Dabo Swinney has served as head coach of the Clemson football program since 2009. During his tenure, the Tigers have captured two national titles in 2016 and 2018 with wins over the University of Alabama both times plus five ACC titles. In 2011, Clemson’s ACC championship was the university’s first since 1991, while the Tigers’ trip to the Orange Bowl that season was their first major bowl appearance since 1981, which is also the last time prior to Swinney’s arrival that Clemson won a national championship.
Swinney in 2015 earned a number of national coaching accolades, including the AFCA, AP College Football, Walter Camp and Home Depot Coach of the Year awards. He also took home that year’s George Munger Award. A three-time recipient of the Paul “Bear Bryant” Award in 2015, 2016 and 2018, Swinney was named ACC Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2018 while in 2011 he was honored as the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year.
Swinney grew up in Pelham, Alabama and attended college at the University of Alabama, where he walked-on as a wide receiver and went on to become a three-time letterman. He won a national title in 1992 and was a two-time Academic All-SEC honoree. While working on his masters degree, Alabama coach Gene Stallings gave Swinney an opportunity as a grad assistant. In 1995, he was hired full-time to coach the tight ends and wide receivers. He moved to Clemson and the ACC in 2003 when he became the wide receivers coach for the Tigers.
