Catriona Le May Doan won three Olympic speed skating medals competing for Canada – two gold and one bronze. At the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, she won a gold medal in the 500-meter speed skating competition while capturing bronze in the 1000-meter event. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Le May Doan defended her 500-meter title by winning another gold medal. Her victory in 2002 made her the first Canadian Olympian to ever successfully defend a gold medal in two consecutive Games in an individual contest.

Le May Doan won two World Sprint Championships in 1998 and 2002 and was the World Champion in the 500 meters three times, in 1998, 1999 and 2001. In total, she won 11 medals at the World Championships. In World Cup competition, she was the champion in the 500 meters four times, in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2003, and also took home the 1,000-meter title in 1998. In 1997, Le May Doan set a world record when she became the first female to ever break the :38 second mark in the 500 meters, a record she would break eight times, the most ever by a female for one distance. Le May Doan was named Canada’s Outstanding Female Athlete three times and, in 2005, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. Additionally, she is a member of both the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.

Le May Doan was born on December 23, 1970 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. After her racing career ended, Le May Doan worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CDC) during its coverage of the Summer Olympics in 2004 and Winter Olympics in 2006 and 2010. Le May Doan published an autobiography, “Going for Gold”, in 2002.
