Bowden began his 55-year coaching career at Howard College (now Samford University) in 1954. He served as athletic director at South Georgia State College from 1956-58 before returning to Howard, where he coached the football team to a 31-6 record between1959-62. He coached wide receivers at FSU for three seasons before taking the offensive coordinating job at West Virginia in 1966, a role he served through 1969 before becoming head coach in 1970. Under Bowden, the Mountaineers were 42-26 and won the 1975 Peach Bowl.
In Bowden’s first year at FSU, the Seminoles finished 5-6 — it would be the only losing record the school suffered under him. From 1982-2009, Florida State made a bowl game every year, winning 21. His overall head coaching record was 377-129. Bowden has been active in philanthropic causes such as the Children’s Hunger Fund and has had the Bobby Bowden National Collegiate Coach of the Year Award named in his honor. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
