Roaf was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas (his mother was the first African-American woman to serve on the Arkansas Supreme Court) and attended Pine Bluff High School. He played collegiately at Louisiana Tech University after being lightly recruited and went on to have a stellar college career. During his senior year, he was named a consensus All-American and was a finalist for the Outland Trophy, which is presented to the top collegiate offensive lineman. Roaf was drafted by the Saints in the first round of the 1993 NFL draft (the first offensive lineman drafted) and garnered All-Rookie honors after starting all 16 games during his first year. He announced his retirement on July 28, 2006.
