Tony Hawk is widely considered one of the most influential and talented skateboarders in the history of the action sport. In 1999, Hawk became the first skateboarder to land a “900,” a 2.5 turn aerial spin (900 degrees), which is considered one of the sport’s most demanding tricks. Hawk also nailed the trick in 2011 at age 43 and again in 2016 at the age of 48. Hawk turned professional at the age of 14 in 1982 and since then has won over 60 tournaments and events, including the 1999 and 2002 X Games. His first professional victory was at the 1983 Spring Nationals Contest in Del Mar, California. In 2011, Transworld Skateboarding named Hawk as the 2nd most influential skateboarder in the history of the sport behind Mark Gonzales.
From 1999-2015, Activision released 19 skateboarding video games in Hawk’s name beginning with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. The amusement park Six Flags featured roller coasters bearing Hawk’s name in 2007 and 2008. He has also had a lengthy acting career both as a skateboarding stunt double and in traditional television acting roles. Additionally, Hawk has been an active philanthropist for much of his career. The Tony Hawk Foundation since its founding in 2002 has awarded over $5.7 million to help open close to 600 skate parks across the United States. He is also a member of the Athletes for Hope charitable organization.
