Kerri Strug won a gold medal in the gymnastics all-around team competition at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Strug was part of the “Magnificent Seven” that included Dominique Dawes, Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu, Jaycie Phelps, Amanda Borden and Amy Chow. In what is considered one of the most inspirational moments in U.S. Olympic history, Strug competed in the vault with an injured ankle. Upon landing, Strug raised her injured leg before falling to the ground in pain. When the Magnificent Seven took the podium to accept their gold medals, Strug was carried by her coach, Bela Karolyi.

Strug first participated in gymnastics at the age of three and began competing at eight. At the age of 14, Strug competed in her first Olympics in 1992 as the youngest member of the American team and won a bronze medal. In addition to her success in the Olympics, Strug also medaled three times in the World Championships and won both the 1995 U.S. Olympic Festival and McDonald’s American Cup competitions.

After the 1996 Olympics, Strug toured with Disney’s World on Ice and Ice Capades and made appearances on Saturday Night Live, Beverly Hills 90210 and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. Three months after the conclusion of the Olympics, Strug started college at UCLA before transferring to Stanford, where she received a BA in communications and MA in Sociology. After college, Strug worked as a school teacher and was appointed by the president to a Justice Department staff position in its Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Strug also authored two books, “Heart of Gold” and “Landing on my Feet: A Diary of Dream”.
