Julius Erving, widely known as “Dr. J”, is one of the most celebrated players in NBA history. Known for his innovative style and acrobatic play that helped popularize the slam dunk, Dr. J changed the game of basketball. He played in the NBA from 1976-1987, spending his entire career with the Philadelphia 76ers. He was named an NBA All-Star 11 times and was honored as the NBA MVP in 1981. In 1983, he led the 76ers to an NBA title with a 21.4 point per game average.

Prior to playing in the NBA, Erving got his start in professional basketball in the American Basketball Association (ABA) playing for the Virginia Squires from 1971-1973 and New York Nets from 1973-1976. As the biggest name in the league, Erving was named an All-Star all five years in the league and was three times named league MVP from 1974-1976. He also won two ABA titles with the Nets, earning playoff MVP honors both years. He joined the 76ers in 1976 after the ABA-NBA merger.

Erving was born on February 22, 1950 in East Meadow, New York. He played college basketball at UMASS from 1969-1971. The school retired his jersey in 1988. Off the basketball court, in 1983, Erving was presented with the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, honoring his community involvement. He later worked as a front office executive for the Orlando Magic, owned a Coca-Cola bottling plant, was involved with a NASCAR Busch Series racing team and spent time as a basketball tv analyst.
