Jim Covert is a retired NFL offensive tackle who played his entire eight-year career from 1983-1991 with the Chicago Bears. In 2020, he was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A member of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team, Covert also was also named one of the 100 Greatest Bears of All-Time. After being picked by Chicago in the 1st round of the 1983 draft, Covert enjoyed a strong first season that saw him named to the Pro Football Writers Association’s All-Rookie Team. He was a stalwart presence on the Bears’ offensive line during the 1980s and earned back-to-back Pro Bowl selections and first-team All-Pro honors in 1985 and 1986. In the former year, Covert was part of Chicago’s offensive line that blocked for future Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton and helped the Bears to a 15-1 record and 46-10 win in Super Bowl XX over the New England Patriots.
Covert was born on March 22, 1960 in Conway, Pennsylvania and played collegiately at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was named a consensus All-American as a senior in 1982. His jersey # 75 jersey was retired by the Panthers and he became a member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003. Other accolades include being named to the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame, Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. After his NFL career, Covert worked in the healthcare industry for such companies as Baxter International, HealthSouth Corporation, Keystone Strategies, LLC and the Institute for Transfusion Medicine.
